TuneXP's interface is certainly no beauty, but since all of its tools are accessible via menu items, it's simple enough to operate. The Memory and File System section lets you perform tweaks such as accelerating DLL unloading and defraging boot files. The other system tools are organized into categories such as Internet, Hardware, and Services. While many of the program's features will go over the heads of those who aren't technically inclined, we're glad the help files fully explain what each part of the program does. Best of all, TuneXP is totally free, making it a fine pick for those who suspect their OS could be in better shape than it currently is.

This program scans start-up applications to differentiate the necessary programs from any potential spyware threats. We found its user interface awkward to read and its results mostly inconclusive.

Startup Inspector for Windows features cartoonish icons, and the overuse of colors makes it hard on the eyes. The interface can be resized to full screen, and you can resize the information columns, but we still had problems with the Comments section getting cut off. A tree menu gives you the option of displaying all of your start-up programs or drilling down to only reveal specific Registry folders. The few command buttons offered were vague but, on a hunch, we clicked the Consult button hoping it would start the scan process and that turned out to be the right guess. The program very quickly scanned and produced results for each of our start-up programs; however, most of the scan results came up inconclusive. The program could not produce any viable information regarding most of the start-up programs' spyware threat status. For a few programs, Startup Inspector for Windows was able to tell us what, exactly, those programs did, the memory used, and whether they were necessary. The Apply button seems to serve no purpose. We were able to deselect a start-up program simply by unchecking the box, so there was nothing to apply.


The program contains links to the publisher's Web site, and a so-called information guide, but we were unable to find any real help there. We recommend you keep looking for a more effective and user-friendly start-up manager

This tiny start-up manager lacks compelling features, but at least it works fine and costs nothing. Simply put, this program allows you to disable which programs run when you boot up your PC. The tabbed interface offers sections for applications and Registry keys that launch on start-up, but since the program offers little information on the applications, it's not useful for identifying spyware or other potentially harmful programs. Nor will you find an uninstaller, a feature that's common in utilities of this ilk. All things considered, Startup Control Panel only will suit cash-strapped users with very simple needs

The program loads all start-up items and color codes them by a harm factor: Required, Not Required, User's Choice, Unknown, and Harmful. Each item includes information needed to judge its worth. Program name, location, command path, rating, and size columns quickly can be sorted or sized for readability. Single-clicking on an item displays the information in a larger box and adds a comment concerning the item. Most comments include a link to Google for more information about the item

We found the harm factor ratings tended to err on the side of cautiousness, with a safe product labeled as harmful on some of our test machines. Users can easily back up the start-up list before making changes. However, while any level user would find Startup Optimizer easy to use, care must be taken before disabling or deleting any start-up items.

However, Ashampoo StartUp Tuner's interface is novice-friendly with simply commands and a bare minimum of nesting menus. You've seen these functions in many other suites. Ashampoo StartUp Tuner's take includes helpful extras such as easy-to-call property dialogs and informational windows. The program's key component is an easy to operate Windows startup editor. Simply click which startup programs you no longer want to load automatically. We liked how well the Services editor explained the need or uselessness of common startup functions. Deactivating one took a mere click. The Add/Remove Program editor could have used sorting capabilities and a simple install directory listing.

Though Ashampoo StartUp Tuner is freeware, the trial demo will last a mere 10 days if not registered through e-mail. All the functions are helpful, if not flashy or information rich. Intermediate users looking for a simple system startup services editor should give this application a test.
